The Winter Garden

A winter garden under a glass roof and a formal lobby with a painted vault: an enfilade, an orangery with citrus trees and a fountain. A SAD project, Uzbekistan.

About the project

A building in the Uzbek architectural tradition: a stone volume with pointed arches and majolica, an ayvan with carved columns along the main elevation, and the glass body of the conservatory. A reflecting pool runs the full length of the facade, doubling the arches and holding coolness at the entrance.

The winter garden

Citrus grows under the glass roof, a fountain runs, benches stand along the paths. The ceiling is draped in pale fabric: it diffuses direct sun and takes away the greenhouse effect that usually makes a conservatory unusable at midday. In winter it is the only place in the building where anything is green.

Four seasons

The scheme was tested across four seasons: spring blossom, summer shade, autumn colour and the bare winter frame of the garden. The last of these is what usually fails — so the evergreen planting and the water are placed so that in winter the park still reads as a composition rather than an empty site.
