The shared street of the complex with the villas’ garage entrances

Alex Villas 4

Alex Villas 4 in Bali: terraced villas and apartments with private patios, pools and views over the rice terraces. Built; architecture and interiors by SAD.

About the project

A complex of terraced villas: the volumes stand tight together and each villa gets not a shared yard but its own internal patio with a pool. The site is narrow, so privacy here is won not by distance between houses but by the height of the blank walls between the courtyards.

The patio courtyard

The patio is the main room of the house, simply without a ceiling. The pool takes up almost all of it, planting runs along the wall, and the living room opens onto it completely through sliding glazing. In the tropics a courtyard like this works all year, and the floor area of the house effectively doubles.

Street and entrances

Each villa meets the shared street with its own garage entry. It is not the obvious move for a resort complex, but it answers the real pattern of use: on Bali people live on bikes and in cars, and a car park at the back of the site with a walk through the whole complex does not work.
