Dubai Tree

Dubai Tree, UAE: a concept for a restaurant pavilion in the crown of a tree — terraces on several levels, a glazed hall and planted balconies. A SAD concept.

About the project

A pavilion grown around a tree. The building does not stand beside it and does not imitate its shape — the trunk and branches pass straight through the floor plates, and each level works its way around them. That is why the plan differs on every storey: it is set not by a column grid but by where a branch happened to grow.

Planting as structure

Along the edge of every floor plate runs a band of trailing planting — it hides the slab edge and visually grafts the building into the canopy. The device is also practical: the trailing plants give extra shade to the glazing of the upper tier, where the tree's own canopy no longer reaches.

Levels

Three levels, each with its own role. The lowest opens onto the lawn through full-height glass and works as the main room. The middle is a ribbon of terrace wrapped in planting, where people eat looking into the canopy. The top is small and almost hidden in the leaves: not a viewing deck but the most private place in the building.
